Audrey stepped into the expansive kitchen, grateful for the routine task of making coffee. Despite the alien brands and tools, she navigated the room with ease. A kitchen was a kitchen, no matter where it was.

Audrey frowned as she searched for a spoon while the kettle boiled. Opening a drawer, she was met with a jumble of unfamiliar cutlery. She had no idea what half of them were for, and the other half looked, quite frankly, scary. With a sigh, she shut the drawer and turned her attention back to the coffee.

The machine chirped, and then she poured herself a large mug.

She needed caffeine. All of it or this afternoon was going to be a battle against face-planting on her desk and taking an impromptu nap. She stirred in cream and sugar, even though she didn’t normally take either. Only on special occasions… or when she’d had less than three hours sleep. It would sustain her through the rest of the afternoon. Or at the least, until the siren call of coffee dragged her back in here like some caffeine- and sleep-deprived zombie.

She took a sip, closing her eyes and savoring the familiar taste. She really needed the small slice of normalcy right now.

The air in the room changed, and she opened her eyes to find Utak looming in the doorway. Her heart stalled in her chest, the mug frozen in place halfway to her lips. His species was predatory, and for a split second, she really did feel like prey.

It was… unsettling.

She forced a smile and put her mug down carefully on the counter. Her hand shook, though, and a tiny bit sloshed over the side onto the pristine marble.

“Hey there! Want a coffee?” she asked, forcing a chirpy note to her voice as she grabbed a cloth to clean up with.

He nodded. She studied him from the corner of her eye as she fixed him a mug. He hadn’t moved from the doorway or spoken. The tension in the room raised the hairs on the back of her neck.

“Are you okay?” she asked tentatively, even as all her survival instincts screamed at her to grab one of the many sharp and unknown implements from the cutlery drawer. Something, anything, to defend herself with.

“You’re human,” he grunted, as if that explained everything.

“Yeah, I thought you realized that? What with me having no tail and horns and all…” she said, going for humor to break the tense atmosphere.

It didn’t work. His response was a cold stare.

“You can’t leave. I won’t allow it.”

She blinked. She’d been so sure he was going to sack her that the imperious statement took her by surprise.

“What do you mean you won’t allow it?”

Before the words had left her mouth, he was there. She squeaked as she stumbled backward, finding herself pressed against the hard wall, his even harder body pressed against hers.

Her breathing went haywire, her heart thundering in her chest as she looked up. Their eyes locked, and his nostrils flared. Then his gaze dropped to her lips, and a deep groan ripped from his chest a second before he bent his head.
